As far as I could check, all content is included – survey of units, general strategies, walkthroughs for all campaign missions, multiplayer tips and a basic tutorial for the campaign editor. I would not buy such books separately, but as part of this package they are alright. The real weakness, in my view, is the binding of the books – the quality is rather mediocre pages wrinkle at the gutter and it feels that some of the outer pages might fall out under heavy use. The small format of the books means small print, which some folks may find uncomfortable (I had no problem with it, as the text itself is very clear and legible). This is another compromise compared to the big-box release, which had the larger format books. These are small-format books (16.5 ⨉ 11.5 cm), not the full-size guides you would purchase individually. The special items of this Battle Chest are the Prima strategy guides.

The Brood War manual, on the other hand, is included – as a CD booklet. Past the background story, the most commonly used parts of the manual are the unit/building dependencies, so players should be happy with the provided colored and laminated dependency chart, which includes also the new Brood War units.

You do get the manual as a PDF on the StarCraft CD, which is a reasonable compromise. The big box releases apparently did come with the manual, so that is one disadvantage of the smaller package. I guess it was too big (large format, 97 pages) to fit in the box with everything else. The package is pretty awesome, but let’s start with the one thing you don’t get – a physical book of the StarCraft manual from the original release. Versions 1.18+ are compatible with each other for multiplayer, whether you use the original re-release (free) or “remastered” version (paid), but they are not compatible with older versions thus for practical purposes, CD collections such as this one retain value only for single-player or local multi-player on legacy systems, not for online play.

As far as I know, there is no way to patch the old CD versions to 1.18 or later – you must download the new client.

In 2017, preparing for the release of StarCraft: Remastered, Blizzard made both the original game and the Brood War expansion completely free and released a new game installer, downloadable through Battle.Net the first such version is called 1.18. I’ve patched my game to 1.16.1 – the last official patch (from 2009), unless you count the 1.17.0 pre-release from 2016. The original version on the disks is 1.05, which was the latest at the time of this release. It is recommended to patch the game to 1.15.2 or later, which eliminates this requirement, without resorting to cracks or virtual CD drives. StarCraft must be installed first, Brood War over it Each CD must be present in the drive to play their respective campaigns. It seems the earlier bundles included the jewel cases as well, whereas later ones typically just had the disks in black paper sleeves (another cost-reduction measure). Note:The disks are compatible with Windows and Macintosh, but I was only able to test the Windows versions.Įach game comes on its own CD.

Technically, this is just a single game + expansion, not a series however, Brood War, true to the tradition of Blizzard expansions, provides full-length campaigns as well as some new features, so it’s not far fetched to view it as a 2-game series. There also exist localized releases, e.g., Chinese, Korean. These seem rarer now, but you can still find them on eBay and similar sites. Some earlier releases of this battle chest came in a bigger box of the same design, or even a bigger, vertical box with a front flap. Packaging is of high quality, with nice embossing of the logo and character faces on the front, and a rigid inner cardboard tray to protect from squashing, while allowing easy access to the goodies. It’s likely cheaper, easier to distribute and takes less space on the shelf.

The box is smaller compared to the original “Battle Chests” of Warcraftand Warcraft II Blizzard settled down to this format for its later Battle Chests for other games. Format: “Small box”, double size, 26.5 ⨉ 19 ⨉ 3 centimetres (other formats exist).Released: 1999 (with additional production runs in later years).
